Akkin – Tiny Dreams (Single Review)

The multitalented guitarist drops yet another successful collaboration, this time with Japanese singer Minami; a power ballad that excels in epic vocal delivery and powerful guitar work.

Akkin, whose real name is Mauro Signorelli, has been storming the industry with his emotionally-powered and adrenaline-fuelled style of pop, rock and metal since becoming a session musician in 2021. As a guitarist and songwriter, Akkin has developed a catalogue of stirring instrumental tracks as well as having built a reputation in the J-Rock and J-Metal scenes for his multiple collaborations with Japanese talent on a wide variety of Anime theme songs; cementing him as a stand-out talent with a colourful repertoire of hard-hitting yet melodic tracks.

Now the musician looks to a fresh partnership, this time with Japanese singer Minami breathing life into the song’s heartfelt lyrics and Akkin’s upbeat, anthemic composition on his new single ‘Tiny Dreams’.

The track begins with a stirring electric guitar intro, injected with Akkin’s signature abundance of high energy with a melodic edge. This sets an upbeat tempo and uplifting tone for the track right off the bat, which immediately grabs the audiences’ attention with its catchy rhythm and powerful hard rock sound. Guest vocalist Minami’s smooth vocals soon join in for the first verse, which is underscored by a simmering series of guitar chords that help drive the verse while contributing to the track’s rousing sound. Minami’s more understated vocal performance here perfectly complements the more subdued music through the verses while keeping listeners hooked from the very beginning. The singer also makes expert use of dynamics to deliver these restrained and reflective vocals that suit the song’s lyrics of trying to stay hopeful and determined in the wake of personal struggles (“Don’t give up no matter what happens”).

Akkin slows things down briefly for the wistfully-sung bridge, which has Minami singing “Looking up at the sky, I can see the stars”, before bursting into the track’s explosive chorus, where Minami’s vocals really shine. Here listeners can fully appreciate the singer’s gritty rock vocals that spark with an emotional richness that so satisfyingly complements Akkin’s energetic guitar parts and the song’s inspirational lyrical themes of belief and mental strength. The lyrics in the chorus urging listeners to forget their worries and continue on towards the light are leant even more depth by Minami’s emotionally-charged vocal performance along with the track’s exhilarating melodies and Akkin’s epic instrumental accompaniment.

Although the lyrics are sung entirely in Japanese, like with many of Akkin’s other Japanese artist collaborations, audiences won’t feel like they are majorly missing out here; while not everyone may be able to fully appreciate the lyrics, the talent of the artists ensures that the feeling communicated throughout the track is never lost, whether it’s through Akkin’s music or Minami’s unforgettable vocal performance.

The singer further encourages listeners to hone their inner strength to defeat their worries and stress in the track’s second verse and bridge, finally reminding us that “Only the strong ones will remain” at the end of the long and hard road to peace. Again, the switch-up between the song’s tentative bridge and the rush of guitar into the chorus really highlights Akkin’s songwriting skill, and will leave listeners feeling breathless before being carried through the next chorus by the sheer force and resolve heard within Minami’s unrelenting vocal performance.

The extended chorus here is the perfect opportunity to admire how both artists’ energy and emotional intent sync across a fiery track that has a lot to say and delivers the goods without question. After a guitar outro that carries on the song’s relentless tempo and sheer thrill until the very last moment, ‘Tiny Dreams’ finishes on a triumphant final note that will leave listeners desperate to hit the replay button.

Score/Outstanding: Listeners will never fail to be delighted by Akkin’s myriad of collaborative projects; his majestically melodic sound is undoubtedly a major reason why the artist is such a memorable name in the world of rock and metal. ‘Tiny Dreams’ displays two artists at the very top of their game while championing a powerful message that many people going through hard times will be able to appreciate. There’s really nothing not to love about that.
