Hailing from Dallas, TX, Alan Cornelio has worn many hats in the industry. He is not only a singer-songwriter but also a guitarist, producer, rapper, and multi-instrumentalist. Having formed the band Alan Cornelio & La Paz in 2019, his music has been described as eclectic, with genres ranging from alternative rock, hip hop, funk, Latin, and much more.
The band’s latest release is called “Why Is It Always Too Good To Be True?,” the latest single off their upcoming 3rd LP, and right away, some synths and electronic beats enter the vibes for a great pop sound. Then, some guitars also join in the music, becoming even more expressive and explosive.
Once Cornelio’s vocals come in, audience members will be in for a surprise. He raps in a whirlwind of verses, spitting out the rhymes with feeling and fervor. I was loving the great energy here. But at times, it was hard to make out the lyrics. Especially toward the chorus, the warbling effects made it sound like it was being sung underwater. I thought this distracted from the music and took away from the invigorating energy coming from Cornelio’s highly energized rap style.
He raps: “How do these wicked ones rig their fates toward their favor/Maybe the energy they have truly ends in labor/That’s a fabricated lie/Please don’t sleep on that design/What we do is have is zero need/I know a love that will make it be.” He continues, “I admit it’s hard to keep that mentality I’m talking about/The world didn’t make me a soft mind/More like a stone I take for feeling the frequencies, finding the limitations/Can I ever belong with you/Take my hand I want us to now.” Cornelio doesn’t sugarcoat it. He tells it like it is. While he disparages why some people seem to prosper while others struggle, he isn’t all that bitter. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel. A love that will save him.
At least, that’s what I got. Like I already mentioned, the rap style went by so fast that it was hard to catch all the lyrics.
The music itself had hip-hop notes, while dipping into tons of funk and disco. Overall, the sound was really fun-loving, while the lyrics had a more serious and more socially conscious side. Production-wise, it felt like the track could do with better mixing and vocal clarity embedded into the overall sound. Some elements, like the chorus, could also use a cleaner production. But the addition of the guitars toward the latter half of the track was a nice touch. Adding some electric instrumentation really helped flesh out the song.
SCORE/Mediocre to Good: Musically, “Why Is It Always Too Good To Be True?” was a blast to listen to, but when it came time to understand the lyrics, sometimes they were either mumbled or, like in the chorus, the warbling effects made it nearly undecipherable. Since Cornelio seemed to have a lot to say, whether politically or socially, I thought it would be important to make the vocals cleaner and the spoken word more distinguishable. From what I got here, Cornelio seems to pack a powerful punch with this energetic song. If the artist could fix those things mentioned in this review, this could very well move this track into the Good/Excellent arena.
