Right from the get-go, Arlo Parks’ “Heaven” opens up with pulsating beats. Once Parks’ warm vocals enter, the song really takes off. Just from sampling the first few notes, audience members will get the sense that they are being wrapped up in a warm cocoon filled with colors and sounds.
“Heaven” is a mellow track filled with minimal, slow burning trap-like electronic beats and synths. The most organic element that colors this production is Parks’ delivery that highlights this track.
“Heaven” is the second single off ‘Ambitious Desire,’ Parks’ third studio album. With this track, Parks shows off her style and flair. Her airy timbre creates an ethereal atmosphere, exposing listeners to her version of “heaven.”
Parks’ voice is so smooth, it is like a glass of ice-cold lemonade on a scorching hot day. It is the balm to your soul when you’re having a bad day. It evokes feelings that everything will be alright in your world and that there is no other place you’d rather be in. Listening to Parks’ singing, I felt like I was entering a wormhole.
It might be a stylistic choice, but gradually I began to notice that it was hard to make out the lyrics. The lyrics are either murmured or are so low-key that they were barely audible. But at the same time, this doesn’t deter you from the music. I got the sense that this was done on purpose to draw you deeper into the sound. The mix, vocals, and instrumentation are structured to recede into the background so that nothing deviates from the flow.
Because of this, you get the sense that you’re floating on a bed of clouds next to your beloved when listening to “Heaven.” The dreamy vocals and hazy electronic instrumentation not only immediately hook you in but also sustain the magicalness of this track throughout.
Parks has done something truly memorable here. The sound of keys, synths and electronic beats provides a mellow escape route from your everyday. I was left with a deep impression by the time the track ended.
Score/Excellent: What definitely stands out are Arlo Parks’ spectacular vocals that evokes everything good in this world. The mood: chill. The atmosphere: spot-on. The charm: 100%. What more can you ask for?
