Babalwa M Acquiesce Album Review (AOTM November)

Amapiano and its wide family of modern South African sounds are rapidly shaping today’s global club culture. The genre’s rise across the African continent has been unstoppable, and now it’s steadily taking over dance floors far beyond it. At the forefront stands Babalwa M, one of the scene’s brightest stars, whose Spotify streams and YouTube views number in the millions.

Her new album Acquiesce opens with a wonderfully unexpected intro, blending touches of jazz, traditional rhythms, and even guitar patterns reminiscent of West African styles. It’s a cinematic, textured beginning that hints at a larger musical universe.

After this, Babalwa slips into a more familiar — but gorgeously executed — amapiano soundscape, merging sleek electronic production with the soulful, intimate vocal delivery she’s known for. It’s a bold move to place a track relying solely on her own voice so early in the album, and it pays off: it immediately centres her artistic identity.

The hour-long album flows with a clear, unified direction while always avoiding monotony. Acquiesce feels bittersweet, like a warm farewell, yet with a comforting sense that reunion is inevitable. A standout moment arrives in “uMoya Wami”, where mid-track house-influenced synths burst into the arrangement — an unusual choice for the genre, and one that works remarkably well.

The impressive guest list adds even more texture and depth: MaWahoo, Thatohatsi, DJ Maphorisa, Jnr SA, JAZZWRLD, Thukuthela, Kelvin Momo and Sam Deep are just a few of the notable collaborators. The album closes with an Outro that mirrors the Intro in both mood and structure, grounding everything in a beautifully soulful frame.

Review To Earn

Acquiesce is not just a strong release — it’s another affirmation that Babalwa M sits at the centre of amapiano’s global moment.
