Bozhidar Popov wears many hats in the music industry. He is the guitarist for the heavy metal bands Karma Incident and Rage Unfold, an international project, which Popov co-founded that spans 3 countries, from Bulgaria, Germany, to Australia. He is also renowned for his work as a composer and producer. For his solo endeavors, his style encompasses the metal, rock, blues and jazz fusion genres.
His latest single, “Love Is An Illusion,” is indicative of his penchant for blending genres. Right out of the gates, there is an obvious metal energy. The vocals also point in this direction, sounding very raw and rough-around-the-edges. Filled with attitude and sass, the wall of guitars complements the vocals.
With every snarl from the drums, percussion, and guitar, it felt like the radioactive airwaves coalesce to make way for something pivotal. Toward the 2:19 mark, the guitar solo draws you in with its contagious sounds. Packed to the brim with swagger, this felt like a song anyone can enjoy, not just metal and hard rock enthusiasts. This is something lovers of rock ‘n’ roll music will find right down their alley.
The gigantic-sounding guitars and larger-than-life feel of the music reflected the artist’s inclination toward the ostentatious. I got that sense especially for this track that at times felt over-the-top. The metal vibes and hard rock feel overflow with snark and cheek. The guitarwork also felt unrestrained, as Popov jams out to his heart’s content. The grandiose displays captivated without being overly excessive. Everything was just right.
SCORE/Good: If you’re fans of the hard rock/metal genres, then this just might be your cup of tea. After multiple listens, I discovered that this track gradually grew on me. The addictive tunes and hard-rocking vibe can get infectious. Give this a try if you’re up for something a little edgier than the usual pop-rock fare that’s crowding the airwaves right now.
