‘Jonas’ is the new single by the musician, Brayden Mullins. The last time I reviewed the musician was through his single, ‘Burn You Out‘. I found the song melancholic. Another observation I made was that Brayden Mullins sounded like Bob Dylan, the two artists carrying what you might call a reluctant persona. This melancholy and reluctance are the same traits I quickly recognize when I begin listening to ‘Jonas’.
Instrumentally, the song is a pared down effort, heavily reliant on a mix of guitar strings. It’s a minimalist offering, just guitar strings and easy vocals. However, the vocals soar at times as the singer gets expressive.
Sometimes the strings play solo, and at times the vocals play over very low-playing strings. In essence, the song goes low and high, provoking a different set of emotions in the listener. It’s a song that’s not rushed and is suitable for the mature listener, if you will.
Lyrically, the song speaks to Christianity. Rather than settling on one Biblical story, the song seems to touch on many, a thing which I find strange. I’m of the opinion that it’s best to stick to one theme. There’s a persona who identifies themselves as Jonas. The listener is left wondering if it’s the Biblical Jonah. There’s also talk of Simon of Cyrene accompanying Jesus.
Score/Excellent: Brayden Mullins has one of a kind of voice. We have already associated with Bob Dylan. In this song, Brayden Mullins gets full marks from me for choosing very pared down instrumentation. The guitar and vocals make for a mature listening experience.
I, however, wish he had focused on one Biblical story rather than mixing it up. Also, while the voice is remarkable, the downside is the clarity of the lyrics. This, I guess, is what one might find flawed in Bob Dylan’s vocals.
