Brayden Mullins – Places I’ve Been  (Single Review)

Today’s review features Brayden Mullins’ new single “Places I’ve Been.”

Brayden Mullins is from Pound, VA, USA. At 17, he was inspired by the music of Keith Whitley, The Stanley Brothers, and James King, later to be inspired by the music of Pink Floyd, Korn, Alison Krauss, and Townes Van Zandt. Brayden’s goal with his music is to “captivate the mind and ear of the audience,” to make the music come alive through his stories and lyrics. Brayden has released a debut album, “Unfamiliar Writings,” featuring songs using only two instruments – acoustic guitar and fiddle. His current single “Places I’ve Been” features a full country band.

So let’s have a listen …

The song starts off with a nice fiddle solo, which is always a good way to start a country song. Brayden has quite the country voice, really nice for the genre. As with most country songs, this song is all about the lyrics. The first verse is sung over the steady strum of an acoustic guitar. The fiddle joins again in the second verse.

The pre-chorus features the lines, “Living life in a strangle, catching life at all angles,” which is an interesting rhyme. The chorus features the line “I still thank the Lord for the places I’ve been.” The third verse then opens up into the pre-chorus and another chorus.

The middle bridge goes back to the pre-chorus and chorus with a dearth of instrumentation, then back into a full instrumentation chorus to end the song. I really like the vocals and the lyrics/rhymes in this song.

SCORE/Excellent: Brayden Mullins new single “Places I’ve Been” is a very well-constructed country song designed to get you out of your seat and line-dancing on the dance floor.
