‘GLOBAL’, the new single by CHANG, is a strange song that blends the minimal with the maximal.
The song starts with frantic guitar strings, resulting in a sound that feels more like rock and roll. As the song progresses, you get some buzzing and abrasive sounds, the result giving an industrial feel. It’s the instrumentation that makes me give the song a maximalist label.
Though the scattered feel of the instrumentation creates a strange sound, what’s even strange is the vocal delivery. It’s a delivery where you can actually count the words – perhaps three words at a time, nothing more. ‘Put them in the middle, CHANG raps, and the beat takes over. It’s strange at first, but soothing as you go. There’s no need to rush, is the feeling I get listening to the song. This is not your usual rap song where the flow’s ready and polished. ‘GLOBAL’ has an amateurish, stop-start feel.
There’s no real story when it comes to the lyrics, except CHANG positions himself as someone who is global. There’s even some swearing and more bragging. ‘I’m the one with the bitches’, we hear. Another lyric going, ‘I’m in the fucking moment’.
SCORE/Excellent: The beat is something else rather than Hip Hop, and the rapping is offbeat and amateurish, but isn’t that the charm of the song? There’s no rush; it’s like listening to a rap song in slow motion. Good track to lift you up and perhaps have you relaxed.
