Dashade is a hip hop artist who says on his Instagram that spiritual music was his first love. This is pretty interesting because his latest single, “Love Like Yonce (ft. Maurice Williams)” doesn’t just rap about the usual things like money and success, street life, or partying and the nightlife. Instead, he gives listeners some advice about love and relationships.
According to the artist: “As the 21st century progresses, there has been an extreme situation among men and women. The love between one another has been lost. It has become taboo to communicate heartfelt happiness to mend grievances between genders, and so two music icons have led in an example of relationship hardship, forgiveness, and the bond between caring hearts.”
Dashade is releasing two songs in this manner. The track that I’ll be reviewing, “Love Like Younce (ft. Maurice Williams)” is giving you relationship advice modelled after Beyoncé’s long-lasting relationship with Jay-Z. The other song is called “Love Like Taylor (ft. Maurice Williams)” and is modelled after Taylor Swift’s relationships, another audio love guide to help you achieve the ideal relationship.
“Love Like Younce” starts with an old-timey recording. Once I hit play, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Next, we hear some sobbing. Then the sound of bees buzzing and gradually some ominous beats enter. As I listened to all this, I couldn’t help but wish for a smoother transition between each section of the track. Right now, each section feels pretty separate. And I think a more seamless approach could help streamline this song.
Already from my first few listens, I can tell right off the bat that Dashade has a strong rap style as he spits out his rhymes with fire and precision. He raps: “She says I do/fifteen days later his sister kick him out with the boot…His marriage maybe through/I see day after day on YouTube these women tripping/They say men we’re through/but men say men y’all f***** up/Y’all f***** real well/We’re through too.” Then: “As I sit back as I think as I drink that special juice/That Bombay/I think to myself love like Younce/She said ‘I think I’m special you think you special too/How far in my marriage/Year after year/I think you need to listen/Listen, take the time/Day after too/Love like me/And I love like you/Love like Yonce.’”
This sounds like pretty sound advice. Beyonce and Jay-Z have been together for over two decades now. So it makes sense to use her and Jay-Z’s relationship as a shining example of a relationship that works. In Dashade’s rhymes, he incorporates the state of love these days and how we can follow Yonce’s example in how to make our love relationships better.
While Dashade’s rap style was very powerful, oftentimes blowing me away with his sure-fire execution, the production was oftentimes found lacking. There was the issue with the transitions, and I felt like the recording could be mixed better. Right now, it sounds a little too raw for my tastes.
SCORE/Mediocre: While Dashade’s rap style was compelling and evocative, the production itself could use a little more work. The transitions were too disconnected, and the vocals and background music oftentimes felt like two separate entities. My advice is to hire a good sound engineer to help better embed the beats into the recording and perhaps make the sections more seamless. All in all, this wasn’t bad, but this was a little too unpolished for my tastes. Once the artist fixes these things, I look forward to giving this another listen and sharing my thoughts.
