Philadelphia native Diamond Blacc is steadily but surely making a name for himself on the global hip hop scene. His debut EP ‘Shannon’s Son’ was released in January 2021. Since then, DB has been releasing music consistently.
“Getaway” is his latest release, which heavily leans into a great R&B vibe. On this track, DB half-sings and half-raps. In the beginning, he does a spoken word piece over some beats and guitar and then segues into a soulful rap performance. The electronic beat is chill as DB’s verses center on the perfect getaway for him and his girl. He spoke words: “Stars are blind/Far as the eye can see/Fantasy or reality, I simply want to be…I don’t need a bag/You’re my getaway/Getaway, baby, I just gotta get away.”
As he sings and raps about spending time with his dream girl, the song flashes by in a wink of an eye. At only around 2 minutes long, this song was a little short for my tastes. However, every second of this 2-minute track is utilized. Not one second is wasted.
This song is perfect for the summer. I can imagine myself relaxing next to a poolside, and having this song blasting in the background. I felt like the music itself embraces the carefree summery months perfectly. Blending hip-hop with soul and R&B, Diamond Blacc’s rap style is backed with some great R&B harmonies, a hypnotic electronic beat, and a great acoustic guitar melody. I thought the acoustic guitar was a great addition. The mixture of acoustic and synthetic instruments really helped flesh out the song.
Production-wise, I have nothing to complain about. The vocals are carefully embedded into the mix, while the mellow sounds of the guitar and electronic percussion mesh well together without overpowering the song. I thought this was a polished and well-produced track that does what it sets out to: provide some light entertainment and something listeners can relax to during their downtime. It serves as the perfect “getaway” now that summer is here.
If you want something light to listen to for your summer months, then this is it. I can definitely see this becoming the jam for the summer. It has a fresh vibe and is definitely refreshing.
SCORE/Good: Despite being only around 2 minutes long, this song has everything you’d want in a summer jam. A fresh sound, packed with a chill and electric beat and some acoustic guitars, DB’s smooth vocals also bring a really cool vibe to the overall sound. Every single note and second on this track was leveraged to make this track the best it could be. Diamond Blacc’s artistry really shines on this song, and I very much look forward to seeing more music from him soon.
