DJ SoulChild AC – Douby (Album Review)

Today’s review features a new album from DJ SoulChild AC, “Douby.”

Patrick Jeanty Jr., aka DJ SoulChild, was born and raised in Atlantic City, NJ. In 2008, he began working in nightlife as a promoter. He became a DJ in 2016. He loves to entertain a crowd, whether it’s in a loud nightclub or an intimate setting. He began producing in 2017. DJ SoulChild has a combined 1.1M followers on TikTok.

DJ Soul Child’s new album “Douby” is a multi-genre work that “celebrates all forms of black all across the black diaspora.” It features everything from house to Brazilian funk to hip hop, and even some soul mixed in.

So let’s have a listen …

APOCOLYPTO starts off with a fast dance beat in the realm of Kool & the Gang. I like the flow. Very upbeat. Loving the mix of the backing vocals to help bring the track to life. Liking the drum/vocals breakdowns.

THE MOVEMENT REVISED kicks off with a low rumble increasing in volume until the vocals kick in. Typical flow pattern on this one. I’m liking the word choice in the DJ’s flow. Loving the horns near the end of the song. An audience could love this song.

BOUNCE REVISED starts with a fast rhythm and flow that melts into the music. Lots of keyboards on this track. Heavily effected vocals. 

ENVY starts with a smooth jazz type track. More of a speak-flow on this track, slower than you’re typical rap flow, which is a nice change of pace. “My greatness gives you more to envy.” Loving “One nation, one race.”

KITTY KAT KAT REVISED starts off with a DJ introduction and then the constant rhyming of Kitty Kat Kat. I’m liking the vocal trills on this one. The DJ then raps “take us to the coochie …” over what sounds like a very smooth jazz-type keyboard-heavy mix. A track all about petting the Kat.

KICK BACK REVISED starts off with a buried keyboard riff, low volume, then the DJ comes in with the rap, heavily effected by auto-tune. Liking the quick drum pattern on this song.

EAT IT UP kicks off with an animal like sound repeating throughout the song. The DJ vocal drops in English, but then switches to Spanish. Interesting. The flow is pretty simple. Liking the quick drum pattern.

SÃO PAULO REVISED starts with a low-volume keyboard riff, then switches into a Brazilian-type instrument/keyboard bed. Not much of a real flow on this one, just repeating the same short phrases over and over.

MORE TO THE MUSIC kicks off with “Ain’t nothing wrong with intelligence.” “Just me and my lyrics, bringing more to the music again.” Talking about “remember when rap had a message.” Loving the wordplay on this one. A song with a message to the music industry. “Care about the art.” The flow is deadly on this one. “It’s time to change the narrative.”

LOVERS GROOVE REVISED starts with a girl talking over a dance rhythm, and then she starts singing. Definite soul groove. Loving the lead vocalist’s performance. “Round and Round, Round and Round, Round and Round.” This track would be good on any dance floor. High-energy soulful groove. Loving the drum and vocals breakdown towards the end of the song.

PARIS MEETS RIO starts off with a mesmerizing drum beat and a circus-like keyboard riff. The lyrics switch languages. Very circular music pattern.

I DON’T WANT EM REVISED [EXPLICIT] starts off with a telephone ringing, then a phone conversation. The vocals are a little buried in this mix, but it suits the overall feel of the song. Liking the DJ’s rap flow in this one.

BOUNCE PT 2 is a remix of the earlier track Bounce Revised. Liking the timing and pace of the lead flow. Lots of interesting sounds buried in this track.

KITTY KAT KAT PT 2 is a remix of the earlier track Kitty Kat Kat Revised. Same themes and musical pieces. “Take us to the coochie …” The conversation towards the end of the song is funny. Loving the ending, “I don’t write lyrics, I produce literature.”

STUDIO 54 TWO starts off with what sounds like an old R&B song playing through a radio, then an alien repeating keyboard riff. Very old school feel.

This album is musically interesting. Lots of ear candy peppered throughout the album. Interesting sounds pop out at every turn. Excellent mix and production. This album was fun to listen to. Very entertaining throughout.
