Fergal Nash Diego (Single Review)
Fergal Nash Diego (Single Review)

Today’s review features Fergal Nash’s new single “Diego”.

Fergal Nash is an independent singer-songwriter from Limerick, Ireland. He is known for his raw, honest lyrics and his heartfelt storytelling. Fergal draws inspiration from acts such as Ryan Adams, Nirvana, The Lemonheads, and Glen Hansard. He also received a Master of Arts degree in Songwriting from the Irish World Academy at the University of Limerick. He performs his lively and energetic shows, both solo and with a full band.

Nash’s new single “Diego” is an emotional tribute to Diego Armando Maradona, released to mark the fifth anniversary of the football legend’s passing. The song began as an assignment during his MA schooling, where students were challenged to write about a non-musician they admired. Maradona’s story — the brilliance, the chaos, the humanity — resonated deeply with Nash. The song reflects both sides of the legend:
the magic and genius he brought to football, and the struggles he faced off the pitch. Musically, “Diego” blends a gentle acoustic atmosphere with a powerful, driving bridge — “Ryan Adams meets Nirvana” as Fergal describes it — capturing the emotional tension of Maradona’s life. It is both a tribute and a reflection, written with sincerity and respect for an icon whose legacy lives strongest in Argentina, Naples, and across the world. As Fergal summarizes the new single, “I grew up watching Maradona’s magic,” Nash explains. “But I always felt the sadness behind the genius, too. ‘Diego’ is my attempt to capture both sides of him.”

So let’s have a listen …

The song starts with a football (soccer) announcer talking about Diego Maradona, soon joined by an arpeggiated acoustic guitar and an acoustic guitar solo, a lovely way to start this tribute song. The song is very folk. It’s slow-moving against the arpeggiated chords. The song’s lyrics are all about “Diego” Maradona, his reputation, and his legend. I’ve been listening to Christmas music today, and this song structure fits right in. Sort of a nice, dreamy track. Then, all hell breaks loose just after 3 minutes into the song, completely different style and feel.

Heavy guitars pounding the chords over the bridge of the song. Then after a minute, the song falls back into its original lilting lullaby sound and fades into another announcer talking about Diego after he scores a goal. I like the addition of the radio/TV announcers at the beginning and end of the song. The song is well put together. Not sure the harder bridge is necessary, but it changes things up.

SCORE/Good: I liked this song, it’s very well written. Not sure about the need for the heavier bridge. I liked the lilting, dreamy feel of the instrumentation. If you’re looking to listen to something different and meaningful, I’d definitely give this track a listen. Much love, Beth
