Genesis Owusu’s debut album Smiling with No Teeth immediately caught my attention. The incredible groove of the album’s second track, “The Other Black Dog”, truly captivated me. Now, five years and two albums later, Genesis Owusu has clearly managed to hold on to the groove he introduced back in 2021. His way of bringing together different worlds — post-punk, hip hop, alternative electronic music and soulful sounds — makes him one of the most distinctive and unique artists I currently listen to.
The album gets off to a very strong start with the addictive synth and memorable flow of “PIRATE RADIO”. In a way, the flow of the track works well as an introduction to the album, even though it is also completely its own full song. The contrast between the almost looping quality of the first track and “STAMPEDE” adds to that intro-like feeling, because “STAMPEDE” hits hard with a post-punk-style beat that leans slightly towards the 1980s and moves forward like a freight train. “HELLSTAR” reminds us of Genesis Owusu’s softer side. There is something familiar in the track that brings Childish Gambino to mind.
The album also benefits from refreshing touches brought by the featured artists, with Ladyhawke being a perfect hit. The collaboration between Genesis Owusu and Ladyhawke sounds so good that it makes you wish for an entire album’s worth of collaboration between the two.
Some might find the album’s versatility confusing, but for me it works and keeps my interest alive throughout the record.
The album is also political and socially conscious, but at the same time it somehow manages to preserve a sense of playfulness and lightness. Even when the themes feel sharp or critical, the music never becomes too heavy-handed. Instead, Genesis Owusu balances the album’s more serious message with energy, movement and a kind of mischievous joy that makes the whole record feel alive.
