Glass Lungs Hideaway (Single Review)
Glass Lungs Hideaway (Single Review)

Today’s review features the new single Hideaway by post-rock band Glass Lungs out of Brooklyn, New York, USA. The band, formed in January 2015, is Chad Henson (Vocals), Alex Lehneis (Guitar), Ryan Lenz (Guitar), John Chrils (Bass), and Andy Amato (Drums). These band members have previously collaborated with notable labels such as Facedown Records, Eulogy Records, Hotfoot Records and Audio Deprived Records.

Glass Lungs, at its core, has a passion for creating a sound that “defies conventional boundaries”, mixing “dreamy and ethereal” shoegaze textures with a “colossal assault of doom metal.” The duality created by this mix of sounds and genres plays a role in the band’s lyrics: “Duality is at the foundation of the band’s exploration into themes of mythology and truth, loss and healing and the fragile path between hope and despair.”

Well, this should be interesting!

So let’s have a listen …

The song starts of with a cascading waterfall of notes, then falls into a heavy doom and dreamy chord progression. Soon the vocals join in, floating near the top of the mix. There’s a dead stop in the middle of the song which opens up into a colossal assault of textures. “It’s the strangest feeling”. I like the dreamy reverb and delay laden lead guitar riffs.

The vocals are nice, but not my favorite part of the song. Feels like I’ve heard this type of voice before from better singers. This song is 6:41 in length. Feels like the song should have ended around the 4:30 mark. Around 5:00 there’s another soft stop with vocals and a dreamy heavily-reverbed guitar.

Honestly, I wish the vocals had been more present in the mix. It was hard to understand the lyrics, it’s like getting brief glimpses of lyrics among the heavy dreamy mix of the instruments. It’s a nice sound overall, though.

SCORE/Good: Glass Lungs delivers a heavy dreamy mix of shoe gaze blended with heavy dark power chords. The song hits your eardrums immediately out of the box. I do wish the vocals were more present, but overall the sound is massive. Would love to see these guys live! Much love, Beth
