Today’s review features the fourth single of late from Hi-Stone Social called “Let’s Go Out.” You can read all their other reviews here.
Hi-Stone Social is a studio music project centered on original songs by Don Kushon. The genres include rock, pop, folk rock, blues, and spoken word, all delivered with a retro rock revival feel. The core band on this self-titled album consists of Kushon on lead vocals, guitar, harmonica, and ukulele, Paul Shannon on lead guitar and backing vocals, Frank Innamorato on drums, and JT on bass. Other session musicians include Joe Paglia on piano. The song was co-produced by Mark J Montoro and Don Kushon. It was recorded and engineered by Montoro at Philly JAM Recording in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and mastered by Pete Humphreys at Masterwork. Artwork was designed by Pat King.
This song is about love, spontaneity and moving past our limitations in life. Kushon’s vocals are influenced by growing up in the foothills of Appalachia and then relocating to Philadelphia.
So let’s have a listen …
With a harp (harmonica) intro that reminds me of The Rolling Stones, and a vocal verse that reminds me of Lou Reed, Hi-Stone Social is back with their new single, Let’s Go Out. A steady chorus of “Let’s go out in the rain.” Loving the bluesy piano riffs wafting through the mix. Very old-school.
A very nice breakdown in the middle of the song. Very Stones. Simple lead guitar melody towards the end of the song, followed by more harp to close out the song. This song could be on a 1970s Stones meet Lou Reed record. If you like that type of vibe, I highly recommend this.
SCORE/Excellent: Hi-Stone Social is back with another retro rock revival song – Let’s Go Out. With distinct nodes of Rolling Stones mixed with a Lou Reed-style vocal, the band lays down a simple, but highly effective, bluesy rock juke joint classic. If you’re into that type of beer-stained vibe, then pick up your copy today! Much love, Beth
