Today’s review features a returning artist, Hi-Stone Social, who brings us their new single, “Tin Man.”
I have previously reviewed this retro rock revival band several times now, and have always given them high marks. You can read those reviews here.
For those who don’t already know, Hi-Stone Social is the brainchild of Don Kushon, a vocalist, songwriter, and musician whose work is influenced by his growing up in the foothills of Appalachia and then relocating to the jazz and blues world of Philadelphia. Kushon’s musical ideas are brought to life by Kushon on lead vocals, guitar, harmonica, and ukulele, with the help of his band, featuring Paul Shannon on lead guitar and backing vocals, Frank Innamorato on drums, and JT on bass. Other session musicians on this particular song include Joe Paglia on keyboard and Mark J Montoro on backing vocals.
The Tin Man was co-produced by Montoro and Kushon. It was recorded and engineered by Montoro at Philly JAM Recording in Philadelphia, PA, USA, and mastered by Pete Humphreys at Masterwork. Kushon says “Tin Man is a blend of spoken word, blues, and rock that looks at the plight of the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz using a metaphorical and modern-day lens.” Sounds interesting.
So let’s have a listen …
The song kicks off with a harmonica solo over a steady, pounding guitar, and then mysteriously slows down the tempo when the full band enters. The vocals in this one are in a slow rap format, sort of stream of consciousness, but planned out. Finally, when the chorus hits, it sounds like a Beatles song. Next up, the obligatory guitar solo, tasteful. And we’re back to the slow rap, loving the references to how a tin man would actually feel, “hollow inside,” etc. Back to the tasty Beatle-esque chorus. And, finally, a short harmonica solo. Straight into more of the slow rap, syncopated to the timing of the band. Another lovely chorus that reminds me of several popular indie rock acts. And a guitar solo to close it out.
I really enjoy Don’s songwriting and the performances and production on these tracks. It’s a well-delivered sound package. Very consumer-friendly. I think this would be a fun band to see live.
SCORE/Excellent: Hi-Stone Social delivers a very cool, slow rap song, the Tin Man, in multiple genres and styles, and pulls it off flawlessly. I am very impressed with the versatility and depth of the performances and songwriting by this band. Well done, boys, well done. Much love, Beth
