Today’s review features Wolfman Jake, aka Jacob Ferguson, and his new single “Gangster came from the Mud.”
Wolfman Jake is a rising independent hip-hop artist whose music reflects real-life struggle, resilience, and the journey from hardship to self-made success. Wolfman Jake draws inspiration from street reality, personal growth, and raw storytelling. His sound blends gritty lyricism with modern hip-hop production to create music that is both authentic and motivational.
His new single, “Gangster came From the Mud,” is about the mentality of starting from nothing and building strength through adversity.
So let’s have a listen …
The new single starts with an industrial soundscape – a keyboard playing a single note riff against an industrial soundscape with ominous voices of doom chanting in the background that reminds me of horror movies like Friday the 13th. Then the flow begins. I’m not sold on the vocals; they seem off (too light and amateur) compared to what I normally hear in this genre.
The track is abnormally short, only 1:25, and it seems to cut off in the middle of the song at the end of the track. The rhymes are ok, but seem pretty standard, nothing that particularly stands out lyric-wise.
SCORE/Good: Wolfman Jake, aka Jacob Ferguson’s new single, Gangster came from the Mud is an admirable attempt to lay down a flow about his struggles in life. I think it falls short of its mark, but the production skills are there, and the artist has potential and promise. Much love, Beth
