Jeff Batson -Surprise (Single Review)
Jeff Batson - Surprise (Single Review)

A native of Cahokia, IL, Jeff Batson knew he had music in his bones right from the start. He began by performing in local venues like The Fabulous Fox Theater, where he delivered standout performances, which were received warmly. He has shared the stage with some major players, including: Gary U.S. Bonds, Three Doors Down, Hank Williams Jr., Keith Urban and Collin Raye, and Dr. Ralph Stanley. In 1997, Batson set his sights on the music scene in Nashville and made the move.

Over the years, Batson has made a name for himself. He splits his time between performing live and songwriting, amassing more than 40 cuts of his songs by other artists. His song, “The Rock,” managed to crack the Top 20 of the country charts. In 2024-2025, four of Batson’s releases reached the top of the Euro Academy of Country Music Chart: “End of the Grains,” “Come on Sunshine,” “Somebody’s Somebody” and “Tryin’ to Get to Heaven.”

It looks like Batson is now back, stronger than ever with a brand-new single called, “Surprise.”

Though Batson is known for his contributions in the country genres, “Surprise” doesn’t feel like a full-blown country track. This song carefully blends elements of pop, rock, and folk as well. This made for a welcoming vibe.

The release starts off with some guitar and synths. The sounds of the banjo add to the country riffs on this track. Batson sings with feeling throughout the song.

Review To Earn

Lyrically, the track narrates the story of a beauty queen who falls for a backyard mechanic. The guy seems to be a no-good drunk. But as it turns out, the protagonist is the “surprise” from their love affair. We watch as the protagonist grows up, and actually wrecked his “daddy’s car.”

The chorus is catchy and melodious: “Surprise, surprise, surprise/Don’t it open up your eyes/It’s fate, it’s love, it’s life/Surprise, surprise/surprise” The next lyrics introduce the next surprise. “Yeah, I never thought in a million years/I’d be smiling this smile, crying these tears/While they’re stealing my heart, filling these arms/two miracles born, one minutes apart…”

This is a heartfelt country-bent track, filled with “surprises” at every corner. The storytelling and polished production were things that really stood out in my mind. I could tell that a lot of detail and hard work went into the making of this track. By the end of this song, “Surprise” continued to stay on my mind long after the track had stopped.

SCORE/Excellent: This is a wonderful track, filled with sentimental details that will tug at the heartstrings. By the time this track ended, my heart felt warm and fuzzy. This song stands apart from the pop bangers that artists are churning out by the dozens. Its genuine lyrics and Jeff Batson’s honest delivery makes this a winner in my eyes.
