Jessie Ware Superbloom Album Review (AOTM April)

Before the release of That! Feels Good! In 2023, Jessie Ware had always felt slightly bland and somewhat lifeless to me, even though her releases were often met with plenty of praise. But That! Feels Good! completely changed my perception of her. It felt as if she had shed her old skin and discovered a world glowing with timelessness and groove.

Superbloom very much continues along that same path. The album flows from beginning to end with remarkable ease. The arrangements are seamless, both in how the vocals move and in how the instruments interact with one another. This becomes especially impressive once you really start focusing on the arrangements and noticing just how many different instruments appear across the tracks. Many of the songs feel like small orchestral arrangements, creating a gorgeous disco/funk atmosphere.

As a whole, the album is a wonderful tribute to the world and history of groove-driven music, while still keeping a fresh touch. It could be described as a kind of curated journey through different eras of soul, funk and disco, like a cross between Bill Withers, Jamiroquai and Jungle.

Every song on the album earns its place, but a few moments stand out in particular. “Sauna” is hypnotic already through its bass synth alone, but the way the song combines melancholy with a danceable groove makes the sweat rise exactly as it should. The following track, “Mr. Valentine”, raises the tempo even further, replacing the synth bass with a dirty, organic bassline that remains just as captivating.

Another powerful pairing comes at the very end of the album. “No Consequences” begins rather lightly and almost unnoticed, but gradually grows into a magnificent gospel-soul moment, ending just as suddenly as it began. The closing track, “Mon Amour”, glides beautifully from start to finish, bringing together the album’s grand arrangements, its more electronic small details, and Ware’s stunning vocal performances.
