Today’s review features the new single How Far Apart Are We? by artist John Michael Ferrari. Right away, I love the cover art – suggestive of alien conspiracy? LOL. Ferrari claims he “is a storyteller who transforms life experiences into emotional songs.” Which is the goal of all songwriters. So that’s a good sign – that he understands the business of song craft.

I like the intro of the song with the female vocals coming in right at the start of the song. Ferrari has a distinctive male voice, nice for this genre of music. The song sounds more like a jazz or old school pop song due to the arpeggiated guitar and piano parts, and the song’s arrangement. I like that the vocals are clear and can be understood easily; it invites the listener to follow along with the lyrics, which makes listening more fun.
The lyrics talk of longing for more time with the one you love, “time won’t mend this aching heart of mine”, “time won’t help me at all.” Wondering if your love is wondering too. I very much like how this song is arranged, everything falls where it needs to be and keeps the song very interesting. And just when you think there should be a bridge, Ferrari delivers on cue. I really appreciate good songwriters who know how to construct a song.
My guess from combining the song’s lyrics with the cover art is that the aliens kidnapped his girlfriend and now he’s missing her! LOL
