Kek Tum Re – You Were Warned (Single Review)

‘You Were Warned’is the new single by the R&B artist, Kek Tum Re. The info behind the music has religious undertones and is said to be another warning after the ‘the book Revelation’ produced a ‘blueprint of warnings for the future started 96 AD’.

The track opens in stark silence, anchored only by a deep, resonant male voice delivering spoken word. The spoken word starts by calling out the ‘Book of Enoch’, where the deep voice tells the listener that the ‘holy One will come forth from his dwelling place, and the eternal deity will tread upon the earth, and appear in the strength of his might’. Around the 25-second mark, the spoken-word delivery shifts, though it remains a male voice.

This is immediately followed by a sound effect resembling a heavy roll of thunder. The expected musical progression drops away, leaving a solitary male voice that has transitioned from spoken narration to melodic singing. ‘Did you just choose to walk away?’ the singer sings in a rather beautiful manner. At times, the singing borders on spoken word. Rather than blending with the thunder, the vocals intentionally pause, allowing the sound effects to ring out in isolation. The effect is jarring; the vocals and sound effects feel like entirely disconnected elements rather than a cohesive arrangement.

Ultimately, you don’t listen to this track for its musical craft, as it severely lacks artistic refinement. Instead, its value lies entirely in its core message: a stark warning. As the singer says: ‘You were warned, and I warned you today’.

SCORE/Mediocre: The track earns full marks for its poignant message – humanity certainly needs this warning. However, the musical craft falls flat; the artist desperately needs to develop their production skills, and even their unaccompanied vocal performance requires significantly more effort.
