Renowned guitarist Kevin Paul was born and raised in Chicago, IL. He left home early on to pursue his love for music. Throughout his musical career, he has played with a wide range of talented artists both in the U.S. and throughout Europe. In 1999, he formed StikMen, who were eventually selected as a top 20 Indie Artist in the U.S. in 2000.
Right now, he frequently performs with the incredible show band Generation. In fact, Kevin Paul’s latest single, “You Need Love,” which is a cover of the 1962 Willie Dixon classic, features guest vocals from Generation’s David Huizenga.
Paul’s rendition of the classic hit is much funkier than the original. I could detect some blues, funk, soul, and even some reggae in the mix. With a long, winding intro of bluesy guitars and percussions, the music is infused with a groovier twist as the band jams out to their hearts’ content. Huizenga’s vocals on this track are also great. He belts out the lyrics with feeling and gusto. His timbre alternates from hitting all the high notes to a lower octave with incredible ease. The delivery is honest and heartfelt.
What really stood out to me was Paul’s musicianship on the guitar. The way he weaves the guitar rhythms and riffs to make the music sound so driven speak volumes of his talent and ability in my mind. It also helped that Huizenga’s funky vocals really complemented Paul’s guitarwork. The synergy coming from both Huizenga and Paul made for a welcoming atmosphere.
To me, this version of “You Need Love” hit all the right notes. It tastefully fuses the blues, funk, and jam band sounds for a great, energetic vibe. It also helped that Paul’s musicianship on the guitar was stellar and on a whole other level together. For those of you who have yet to experience Kevin Paul’s rendition of “You Need Love,” you’ve seen nothing yet!
SCORE/Outstanding: Kevin Paul puts a whole lot of loving into his latest single, “You Need Love.” And you can tell too. Every note on this track is searing. Every riff and chord pulsates with stamina. This track will definitely leave an impression, whether or not you are a fan of the funk, blues, or soul genres. This is a really cool, fun, and groovy track that will definitely have you moving around in no time!
