Laura Korinth - Angel (Single Review)
Laura Korinth - Angel (Single Review)

It’s rare to see technical, hard sensibilities mixed with delicateness when it comes to music. It exists, but it’s quite rare. Think of an artist that mixes the futurism of Kraftwerk with the vocals of Kali Uchis mixed with Bjork, and you get the angel that is Laura Korinth. A unique individual with her artistry and approach to music, today’s review will centre around her newest single, titled ‘Angel’.

Laura Korinth is a Berlin-based artist with roots in Guyana and English. Her unique story and sound truly defies convention. She was raised in a strict religious community, which propelled her to find her true freedom and identity in music and poetry, being an autodidact in these fields. She overcame the odds, and her musical journey began unexpectedly during a wild night in a techno club. She discovered her latent talent while spontaneously accompanying a street musician. This pivotal moment itself ignited a transformative adventure through the USA and South America, ultimately inspiring her to write her first songs.

Her voice itself has a unique tone, a blend of velvet lows and smoky, jazz-inspired mid-tones, as well as powerful, diva-like highs. Her vocal range then synthesizes to give ‘Angel’ its depth and emotional resonance, with each note revealing a different facet of her artistry.

Korinth is also known for her role as the vocalist and co-writer of the iconic track ‘Gravity’ by Boris Brejcha, a collaboration that introduced her to a global audience and solidified her place in the electronic music scene. Her unique ability to blend genres and create music that transcends boundaries has earned her recognition as one of the most exciting new voices in the industry.

‘Angel’ itself as a track is described as a reflection of the awakening to self-awareness, a realization that we are not simply the roles we play in life in a surface level manner. It delves through the emotional terrain of joy and sorrow, conflict as well as peace. The song is a totem for people to embrace their own internal contradictions, and go through a journey of self-acceptance and understanding, where the battle between light and dark become a path to inner harmony.

The song begins with Korinth’s vocals bearing a slightly bluesy tone, before entering a mysterious, electronic darkwave soundscape. It evokes a sense of mystery, all while bearing the futurism of electronic music and desolate synth sounds, mastered and panned perfectly to give you the illusion of a bare room. As the song climaxes to its main segment, the strong EDM influence in this track is definitely apparent, sticking out through its arpeggiation.

Laura’s vocals is definitely very jazzy and bluesy, but it can also take on the act of seduction, luring the listener to truly listen to her croon. A good use of vocal mastering and effects also help to take her vocals to an otherworldly, yet deep soundscape.

I truly enjoy the instrumental of this track, it reminds me of dark techno raves. The pulsating beat is matched with the best synthesized arpeggiations, giving you the feel of ‘stacked steps’ as well as digital light, and it is also accented with the slight build-up in the prechorus. It also has very interesting quirks, with motifs sprinkled throughout the track that give it a bit of a digital shine to it, adding light to the darkness itself.

From a compositional perspective, it’s not the most complex song, but its complexity lies in arrangement and synthesis itself. I think this song will truly appeal to electronic music heads like myself, who honestly adore this song. I couldn’t stop replaying it. It reminds me of a modern-day take of Klaus Nomi’s ‘warnings-in-music’ style mixed with darkwave. Laura Korinth is an artist to look out for.

Score/Excellent: Laura Korinth lures you into her soundscape with ‘Angel’, a darkwave electronic number that has layers behind it when it comes to how the song is mastered and layered. It has all the marks of an excellent, catchy and delectable electronic-meets-pop track.
