The rhythm and blues singer Liam Westra has a single out. It’s called ‘Ameriland Flag of Hope’. In their artist information, Liam Westra writes that they have been involved in politics from a young age.
This connection between politics and music makes me uneasy. On the other hand, I do factor in (perhaps grudgingly so) that politics and music and politics can gel nicely.
As I review this song, I’m reminded of the late blues singer, Charles Bradley. There’s a song of his where he asks why it is so hard to make it in America.
As for ‘Ameriland’, the song starts with a monotonous piano key. When the key disappears, you have the artist delivering some spoken word intro, if you will. The narrator speaks of Americans being in a time of uncertainty, those same Americans being confused about their futures, and having no trust in their government.
After this spoken word part, Liam Westra then launches into a sung delivery. The instrumentation is so sparse, uninspired and almost non-existent. It’s the singing that keeps this song from falling apart.
SCORE/Good: The artistry of this song is mediocre. It has uninspired instrumentation, and while the singing keeps the song from falling apart, the genre also plays a role. For all the song’s weaknesses, it’s important in that it reminds us of the bigger picture: society. Our world has so many ills, and just because a song is badly done does not mean we should not try to understand its deeper message.
