Maini Sorri – Belief (Single Review)

‘Belief’ is the new single by Main​i Sorri, a gospel artist living in Sweden. The song is a collaboration with Carl Culley, a producer from New York. It’s their second project together. 

Instrumentally, the song starts with piano that’s enough to pull at your heart. Thick bass elements, which seem simple, then join the piano. If the piano pulls at your heart, the vocals do as much. They are mellow, operatic and angelic. This makes me think that her vocals are Maini Sorri’s greatest asset. These are vocals likely to make any song worth listening to. 

My main issue concerns the lyrics. I’ll touch on this issue delicately. With a title like ‘Belief’, you’d expect the song to be in English. Indeed, the song is written in English, but without looking at the lyrics, some listeners will feel that Maini Sorri is not singing in English. Without looking at the lyrics, I could hear the line clearly.: ‘He’s your savior for your misbehavior’. Maini Sorri sings that line in a speechlike, if not forceful, manner. While I could hear this part, I needed to look at the lyrics for the other parts.

I was tempted to find fault with this, but I think the fault lies with us since we mostly prioritize English songs and in a way forget that some other musicians, like Maini Sorri, are multilingual. 

However, with the aid of the lyrics, the song is partly about Jesus. Maini Sorri paints the story of Jesus: his thorny crown falls to the ground, yet he never complains despite the pain. Maini Sorri reminds the listener that Jesus told us he would rise from the dead.

SCORE/Excellent: Overall, this is a song with beautiful instrumentation. The instrumentation is calm and does not enervate. This is a song for people who appreciate soft music that’s enjoyable to the senses without enervating them. This is a song you can listen to in the background. However, it speaks to the pain Jesus went through and his promise of resurrection.
