Today’s review features Malin Schell and her new single “Mother Nature.”
Malin Schell was born in Switzerland in 1990 and now lives in Brazil. Malin has been singing and playing the cello, guitar, piano and various percussion instruments since childhood. She studied music & movement and jazz singing at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts with Lauren Newton. She eventually obtained a master’s degree in vocal improvisation at the Basel Music Academy, studying under Fred Frith and Lisette Spinnler.
Inspired by nature and its sounds, Malin sings, improvises, and composes her songs. Her musical work is influenced by her travels around the world. She listens to the voices of different cultures and traditions, which serve as a source of inspiration for her music and open doors to new worlds of sound, bridging between people, cultures, and hearts.
So let’s have a listen …
The song/video shows Malin surrounded by beautiful nature scenes. I love the part where she gently places flowers into a pond by a waterfall and creates a worship circle of flowers and leaves, with burning incense.
On to the song itself. The track starts with a gently fingerpicked acoustic guitar accompanied by a string section, with Malin gently humming the melody. Malin begins sweetly singing in the first verse. I love the minor change that happens towards the end of the first verse. “I am in perfect harmony.” Loving the musical uplift at the end of the first chorus. A master-class in songwriting.
The strings join Malin humming, and then there is a gorgeous string solo, leading into the second verse. Again, struck by the minor change at the end of the verse, leading into the uplifting chorus. “I become one with the light of the sun.” The song ends, appropriately, with “I become one with all that is. I am pure love.”
SCORE/Excellent: Another excellent song from Malin Schell. Full of masterful songwriting techniques and performances. A song about becoming one with nature and becoming love. Very inspirational. Much love, Beth
