Michael Gutierrez-May – Two Stoplights (Single Review)

Today’s review features the new single by Michael Gutierrez-May called “Two Stoplights.” I reviewed this song previously when I wrote the review for his album, “Light Still Shines the Same” which you can read here. But today, we’ll be going on a deeper dive into this particular song.

Michael Gutierrez-May is a singer-songwriter who focuses on original songwriting, songwriting collaborations, and occasional live performances. He has been involved in folk and acoustic music for the past 35-40 years as a coffeehouse manager, concert organizer, and now as a songwriter and performer.

So let’s have a listen …

This new single starts off with a two-chord vamp, which is the main structure of the song, although it has a chord-lift when the chorus hits. The two-chord structure gives the song a very dark folk feel. I like the string section that comes in on the second verse, a very nice production touch. Michael has a talk-singing style that is good for storytelling, and the album, on which this song appears, is full of good stories. I like the chord structure and musical composition of this folk song. And the strings!

SCORE/Good: Michael Gutierrez-May delivers a nice folk song with his new single Two Stoplights from his album the Light Still Shines the Same, released earlier this year. This song has a very dark folk feel. If you’re into this type of folk music, this might be a good song to check out. Much love, Beth
