Michel Héroux – Home (Single Review)

Today’s review is for the single “Home” by jazz artist Michael Héroux. ‘Home’ is a ‘contemporary jazz’ tune that includes a mixture of some of Michael’s musical influences (incl. jazz fusion, prog rock, classical, pop). Michael says “‘Home’, can refer to the feeling I get when listening to this tune, (and to) nailing that sound that I’ve been searching for a while.”

So let’s have a listen …

It starts with an acoustic guitar, followed by an electric guitar playing arpeggios. I really dig the bass line in this track. And the lead guitar sits solid in the mix. I like the rise in the middle into and out of a new key, and then back into the original progression. Some very nice guitar playing going on in this song.

Later in the track, there is a very straight ahead jazz interpretation referencing classical motifs. And yes, even a bass solo! That gives the track new life as all the instruments join the musical fray competing for attention and space, cascading sonic tastes for your ears. At the end, everything falls away and we once again hear the acoustic guitar take us out. The production of the musical track itself is excellent, as is the mixing and mastering. This is an instrumental track, no vocals.

I reviewed another jazz piece recently and while the performances were excellent, I rated it as Good because the sound was largely atonal. What I like about this track is the melodies and how they fold in and out of each other. This track is very melodic and sweet to your ears. And the changes that happen within the track are interesting. Very well done Michael.

The performances and editing on this track are excellent. I only wish Michael had listed all the musicians who played on the song. Next time.
