UK-based Gospel singer, NUEL Godwin, has a new 4-track extended play, You Are My Life.
The EP starts ‘You Are My Life’. It’s mostly a soft song in terms of the singing and instrumentation. NUEL Godwin starts by vocally galvanizing his backup singers, saying, ‘Come on, sing!’
The backing vocalists enter, led by a soulful female voice. The instrumentation remains understated – drums that are soft yet thick and sparse, paired with gentle piano chords. NUEL Godwin begins with a conversational delivery: ‘You are the Lion of Judah… Spirit of the living God’. As the energy builds, his voice swells with conviction, declaring, ‘You are my life. You are my peace. You are my hope. You are my joy. You are the source of my existence.’
Then, the measured pace shifts. The tempo quickens as the vocals begin to soar, culminating in the powerful, resonant cry: ‘His name is Jesus!’ At its heart, this is a Gospel track dedicated to the worship of God.
‘Holyghost’ opens with the weight of Scripture, as NUEL Godwin recites a passage from Isaiah: ‘They that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength… they shall mount up with wings as eagles’.
His spoken word sets a sacred stage before the music bleeds in – a lethargic but piercing piano accompanied by a lonely horn and the subtle pluck of acoustic guitar. Understated backing vocals layer into the mix as NUEL Godwin transitions into a soft, melodic praise, alternating between the title ‘Holyghost’ and the recurring lyric, ‘Spirit of the living God’.
The performance eventually transcends traditional lyrics, giving way to a moment of raw, spiritual intimacy as the singing ceases and Godwin begins speaking in tongues.
‘Touch Me Lord’ opens with a delicate piano melody, creating a space for NUEL Godwin to stretch his vocals into a yearning plea: ‘Touch me Looooord’. While much of the project focuses on the vastness of the Holy Trinity, this track feels personal. The lyrics ‘I wanna do your will” take us into the realm of the deeply devotional. It is an intimate surrender, anchored once again by his signature, recurring refrain: ‘Spirit of the living God’.
The EP closes on an energetic high with ‘Repay You Jesus’. The drums are more prominent here, driving the tempo as NUEL Godwin delivers a soft but resolute worship. Early on, his voice blends almost indistinguishably with a female backing singer, creating a hauntingly unified sound before both voices soar and branch off into their own registers.
The track feels lived-in and communal; you can hear Godwin chuckling and speaking to the people singing along with him – perhaps fellow church members.
SCORE/Excellent: This EP is characterized by its quiet intimacy, defined by a soft-sung delivery that occasionally breaks into a soar. It is a minimalist project at its core; the lyrics are sparse, opting for a ‘less is more’ approach that relies on atmosphere rather than dense songwriting to convey its message.
