‘One Man’s Band Overture’ is a new no-vocals single by Pablo Embon, an Argentinian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer and producer.
The song starts with Pablo Embon playing a piano progression that includes rich, bright and soulful keys. Then comes a piercing orchestral sound.
So far he has created two common sounds, but comes the more innovative third sound, which sees the orchestral sound replaced by a progression that starts with a percussive kick. Beneath the kick, pulsates a single sweet piano key that at times gives you a rhythmic pattern. An orchestral sound soon returns, but is not as piercing as before.
Then a single melodic bright piano key returns, soon joined by a tinkling bell sound. This is a song where you go through at least five emotional experiences – a ‘mini-album’ in a song, if you will.
Chloe Tiffin-Gearing previously reviewed his album, Plateaus and Other Enchanted Lands, finding it ‘a multifaceted work of jazz fusion and beyond’. Pablo Embon has released 25 original albums since 2004, producing everything himself. The number of his albums and the work he does single-handedly are amazing feats. What might be missing, however, at least from ‘One Man’s Band Overture’, is his voice.
SCORE/Excellent: This is an excellent single. There’s no doubt that Pablo Embon is an excellent and quality musician: his production is top-notch. But by him moving from one completely different sound or instrument to another in one song makes me feel that he’s doing too much. One wonders whether Pablo Embon might not produce just as quality music, for example, by taking a piano and exploring it in however many ways he can. Be that as it may, his new single should be enough to take you out of your comfort zone.
