The musician Rabbi Hebel Manuel has a new Scripture-inspired single, ‘Synagogue of the Holy 7 Shofars’. In their artist information, the muso writes that the song is ‘a spiritual song in reference to the verse from Hebrews chapter 13 verse 2’’.
The verse talks about offering kindness to strangers, for in this way, ‘some who, while they were unaware, were worthy to receive Angels’.
What I love about Scripture-laced music is that it offers the listener an easy hack on ‘going to church without going to church’. But besides this merit, the song’s piano instrumentation is about the only other good thing in this composition. The piano progression shows some signs of inspiration, offering warmth and creativity. But the song overall sounds like an uninspired offering.
The song starts with the recitation of Scripture. So far, so good, but the strange thing is that when one goes into the song expecting talk of Hebrews, the song quotes from the Book of Revelation.
Later, after the spoken speech, if you will, you get some dry singing over the piano. The singing is half warm and half strained. Several times listening to this part, I kept thinking of John Legend and his piano playing in his music videos. In short, there’s a touch of genius in the singing as well as the combination of such singing and piano playing.
SCORE/Good: If you love piano and perhaps vocals over piano – such minimalism – the song is a treat, although you might have to dig deeper to enjoy the composition. On the other hand, this might be what you call fringe music: it doesn’t pop out like the usual pop music out there. Of course, the artist has plenty of room to tighten up their offering.
