Randy C Moore High Cost of Low Livin' (Single Review)

Randy C Moore’s latest country single, High Cost of Low Livin’, delivers a fascinating musical paradox. Entering fifteen seconds into a driving instrumental track, Moore’s vocals exude a pure, infectious joy – even as the lyrics tackle the heavy toll of reckless living. This upbeat irony is so palpable that when Moore pauses for a brief, literal chuckle mid-song, it feels entirely inevitable.

Much like Dolly Parton’s classic ‘9 to 5’, the track masterfully subverts a potentially depressing subject with an incredibly cheery delivery, making it clear that the ‘high cost’ won’t be slowing him down anytime soon.

Instrumentally, the song is anchored by a thick, impressive kick and bass groove, complemented by catchy string hooks that linger long after the track ends. While Moore’s vocals occasionally sit slightly beneath the heavy bass mix – leaving you wishing he would lean into a slightly higher register – his enjoyable performance keeps you hooked from start to finish.

The artist info details the song as having been written by Moore and Mason, and describes the song as ‘a kick in the pants, hard driving, POV about the downside of the high life’.

The song is a nice introduction to the Texan who has been making music since he was a teenager, and lyrically, it touches on our obsessions, such as money.

SCORE/Excellent: Although I say this grudgingly, this is an excellent song – hedonistic, and thematically leaving me cold. My worldview is that we should move away from our vices, but this song celebrates them!

I’m, however, in love with Randy C Moore’s vocals. They are warm and effortlessly done, but as I’ve mentioned in the review’s body, I feel raising them up a notch would enliven his songs more.
