Rebel G Society - Don Almighty - Wolves Among Us (Deluxe) (Album Review)

Rebel G Society returns to this platform, this time, with a brand new project titled Don Almighty – Wolves Among Us (Deluxe). If you’re new to Rebel G Society, you can catch up with what you’re missing here. His brand centers around being a multi-hypenate and multidisciplinary creative, all while venturing into the world of music through the culmination of exploration and the sum of his influences.

In this iteration of his creativity, the album presents itself as a deeply personal and experimental body of work that was conceptualised, written and produced in three weeks, as the result of a creative sprint that was described by the artist as intense as it was rewarding.

The foundation of the album was rooted in a novel Rebel G Society wrote during the height of the pandemic, one of a fictional epic that revolves around a mysterious, immortal wolf warrior- a ‘Don’ who once tainted the world through destruction and darkness but now seeks redemption. His primary mission is to save a love interest from the very chaos he unleashed. The narrative is dark, tragic and complex, with the music reflecting the same level of emotional and cinematic intensity.

One of the standout aspects of the album is the vocal work, with the artist using extensive vocal manipulation and autotune techniques, going so far as to completely alter his voice to portray a female character. This duality allowed him to create dialogues, emotional contrast, and depth within the storytelling. Each track carries its own cinematic moment, while staying true to the overarching theme of redemption, chaos, and love in a dying world.

Another interesting aspect of the project is the fact that Rebel G Society handled every aspect of the production himself, from the songwriting to the sound design, mixing and mastering. It’s genre-bending, thought-provoking, and unique.

I think this album definitely delivers in terms of being unique and quite distinct from other projects out there. It has unique time signatures and percussive elements littered throughout the album, accented by punchy synths and other forms of existential sounding synthesizers that provide each track with a very dreamy and ethereal vibe. A recurring theme I do detect within his production style is the combination of harsh drums and soft, airy pads, and I too love to use that method as a producer.

Some aspects of the melodies within these songs can delve into slight atonality, but it gives these compositions a lot of character and, actually, a higher level of musical variability for the listener to not be bored. Boring is truly the last word i’d use for this album.

It bears a very similar influence cycle from the previous release, with a slight push towards more house and hip-hop elements, making it where if you’re familiar with his previous releases, you also won’t be too shocked or pushed away from this.

In some aspects, the songs have 808s that ‘interact’ with the song as a vocal piece as well, and I find that very interesting. The use of autotune, too, within the whole album, helps to elevate the voices and phrases within the structure of the songs in this album. It’s a mixture of sounds that are tropical, urban, dreamy but also experimental enough to warrant some sort of compositional praise.

The mastering and mixing is passable. I think there’s slight issues with the mastering, but the songs are honestly too good for me to truly say it ruins the experience of listening to this album. I really, really appreciate how innovative and different some of the melodic chops and methods used in this album are. If anything, we don’t need music that sounds like something already made- we need more people bold enough to take the next step, just like Rebel G Society has.

SCORE/Excellent: Rebel G Society returns with another body of work that honestly supersedes his previous release in terms of cementing himself as somewhat of a pioneer within the genres that he’s merged together for his own unique soundscape. ‘Wolves Among Us (Deluxe)’ is a treat to the ears for anyone who’s looking to catch a vibe, or even someone who is well-listened and familiar with the limits of music theory. Surprisingly compelling.
