Richie Sampson YOU YOU (ARE MY EVERYTHING) (Single Review)

UK-based pop singer Richie Sampson has a new pop ballad, ‘YOU YOU (ARE MY EVERYTHING)’. Opening with horn stabs, the track soon settles into a groove anchored by thick, rhythmic thumps.

While Richie Sampson describes his vocals as soulful, I find his voice particularly thick on this track, with a delivery that feels chilled and almost lethargic. However, there is a natural bigness to his tone; the benefit is that he can project and raise his volume without ever sounding like he’s straining.

For a song with a title that suggests something rosy and blissful on the surface, the lyrics open with immediate tension. The persona (presumably a man) asks his addressee (presumably a woman), ‘Must I still wait or It’s all over?’ It’s a position nobody wants to be in, calling to mind that classic Bob Marley line: ‘I don’t wanna wait in vain for your love’.

The narrator reveals another source of tension: the addressee’s friends. Their outside influence over the relationship is laid bare when he asks, ‘Or do your friends still tell you what to do?’

While the song begins with tension, the refrain – ‘You, you – are my everything’ – shifts the mood, speaking to the sense of a partner who truly completes you. Lyrically, this is the song’s most radiant moment, where we hear how the addressee brings joy and a sense of renewal throughout both summer and spring.

However, the song remains complex. The addressee may be the persona’s ‘everything,’ yet they are not without flaws; we hear the narrator pointedly instructs them to ‘Avoid your foolish pride’.

SCORE/Excellent: This is a must-listen if you’re looking for a chilled, laid-back vibe. Richie Sampson certainly has the vocal presence to carry it, and the overall production is undeniably smooth. Interestingly, the lyrics shy away from revealing exactly what sparked the tension in the first place, leaving that part of the story to the listener’s imagination.
