The Elegant Chasers are back with a brand-new single, titled “Self-Implode.” It is their latest offering in anticipation of their third album called ‘Songs of Self-Implosion,’ which will be out later this year. Maz Loizou is the mastermind behind this project. He handles everything from instruments to vocals. However, he is utilizing the help of bassist and executive producer Simon Hepton and drummer Lloyd Pritchard to permanently join the ranks of the Chasers for their live performances.
The songs were written over a span of three weeks during a difficult time in Loizou’s life. Rather than dwell on his troubles, he quickly wrote and recorded everything onto tape. “Self-Implode” is the opening effort of a very much anticipated work.
Citing influences from indie bands from the 90s as well as alternative big hitters like Faith No More, Beastie Boys, and Shunk Anansie, TEC has a tendency to mix hip hop into their alternative rock sound. What comes across is surely explosive and in-your-face.
“Self-Implode” opens up with a guitar riff. Then some electronic beats enter, creating an immediate impact. The electrifying rock sounds are very melodic, drawing listeners closer into the sounds. During some passages, the vocals take on a hardcore/metal vibe, oftentimes going into an all-out rap sequence. The great energy coming from these passages reminded me of bands like Seether and Linkin’ Park.
The guitar solo toward the 2:37 mark soared and felt very atmospheric. Loizou keeps listeners amped with his high-energy performance. The only thing was that I felt the production was too noisy. Because of this, the vocals ended up feeling buried in the production. A cleaner mix might help make Loizou’s vocals stand out more clearly and not get drowned out by the music.
All in all, this was a catchy alternative track, jam-packed with great energy. I can really see this gaining traction if the artist fixes the busyness of the track and the overall mixing. I think TEC has all the ingredients here. All they need to do is fix a few things post-production, and I think they’ll have an addictive anthem that will be a hit with listeners!
SCORE/Mediocre to Good: I grew up in the 90s and 00s, so bands like Linkin’ Park and Flyleaf, who are hard-hitting and big on emotional detail, were often on my playlist, so The Elegant Chasers “Self-Implode” is definitely something on my radar. I feel like this track has a lot of potential. The energy and delivery were spot-on. However, the vocals were too embedded in the track, and I felt the noise level distracted from the overall sound. This could be easily fixed by getting a good sound engineer to clean up the mix a bit. Other than that, this track had all the makings of a summer hit. I look forward to seeing an updated version of this recording and wish the artist the best of luck.
